The Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development is an educational and research organisational unit within the Faculty of Business Administration dealing with agricultural economics and rural development in the broadest sense. Relationship with national and international students, researchers as well as institutions is of utmost importance for us.

In the beginning of the 1960’s, the Department was the first in Hungary in providing degree programme for agricultural economists, which has maintained in normal and correspondence forms for decades. After the cancellation of the specialisation, students could learn agricultural economics and rural development within the main- and sub-specialisation of environmental economics and rural development. The Department had an own PhD programme until 2002 with around 30 students.

Since 2006, under the framework of Bologna, the Department coordinates the Bachelor programme of Agrobusiness and Rural Development Engineer (ARDE), and since 2010, the Master programme of Rural Development Engineer (RDE). The Department also coordinates a common Bachelor programme with Dronten Professional Agricultural University (DPAU) since 1999, while a European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis (AFEPA) was launched with our contribution in September 2011.

The Department has traditionally good relations with national and international higher education and research institutions. Our staff is involved in many national and international research programmes and has a significant publication activity. Our main research areas are: competitiveness, agricultural policy, international agricultural trade, agri-market processes and rural development. Our staff is continuously seeking to strengthen the relationship between education and research by utilising latest results in courses.

The aim of the Department is to provide high quality education and motivate students as well as to be part of national and international research activities in order to create an internationally determinative education and research unit.
