The course provides and overall introduction into the main topics, methods and theories of economic sociology. After introducing concepts and classic theories of economic action the course has a special focus on the issue of economic development and its social, political conditions on a macro level. It will introduce major relevant theories of socio-economic change on a macro level (evolution, modernization, imperialism, dependency theory, world system theory, new international division of labor and globalization).
The course will also consider the problems of markets and the way sociologists have considered economic relationships within the markets and beyond markets and how this is related to the way economists understand economic action. The problems of economic actions and development will also be explicitly related to the problems of institutions, including relevant transaction cost theories of economic development. The course will also pay attention to the concept of interest, the problems of informality and the role of networks in economic spheres.
