1. General information about the course and the instructor
Course title: Civil Society and Organisation in Transition

Course objectives:
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the phenomena of civil society and non-governmental organisations, with a special attention to the social, political and market transitions. The course aims also to provide the students with the essential skills for NGO management. After successful completion of the course, participants will understand the place of the third sector in private sphere of the social world and its role in modern society. They will be aware of various models of civil society and non-governmental organisations, as well as of the differences in civil society functioning between various countries and regions, and political regimes. The course will also equip students with NGO management knowledge and practical skills. As the course will strongly focus also on preparing participants to be able to play a managerial role in an organisation, each student is expected to acquire skills necessary to lead a non- governmental organisation, such as:
- Strategic planning 

- Financial planning 

- Volunteers recruitment and management
- Risk assessment
- Performance/Programs evaluation
- Communication


Évközi tanulmányi követelmények: Requirements:
1. Class participation (2 absences per semester allowed)
2. One 15 – minutes in class presentation – case study of one NGO from student’s country and 15 minutes discussion (student prepares the topic/questions for the discussion) – 15% of the grade
3. Group work (in class and at home) – 35% of the grade
Developing a project of a non-governmental organisation working in the area of choice. Based on the readings, lectures and discussions, group should prepare a paper including:
a. NGO’s short description (geographical area of work, target group, size, activities)
b. Mission, vision, goals and objectives
c. Three 1-year long projects plans
d. Risk assessment for all three projects
e. A line-item budget for one year
f. A Fundraising strategy for one year
g. Evaluation plan of the one of developed projects
4. Written exam – 50% of the grade

c. Transnational Social Movement Organisations and shift towards democratisation and globalisation, civil society organisations in United Nations and European Union
d. Hungary and the situation of the civil society during the shift towards illiberal democracy
3. Business-government-civil society relations, corporate social responsibility, social capital and trust
4. Civil society and growing influence of social media, new kinds of advocacy, whistle-blowers and hacktivists
5. NGO management: Strategic planning, mission, vision, goals and objectives
6. NGO management: Communication and leadership
7. NGO management: Financial management, budget planning and controlling, estimating costs, resourcing non-profit organisations, fundraising
8. NGO management: Volunteers management, risk assessment
9. NGO management: Program evaluation, impact assessment
