A tantárgy szakmai tartalma: The aim of the subject is to introduce the students into the economic history of Eastern Europe. The main goal of the course is not only a chronologically compiled economic history of the region but to focus on the fundamental economic problems, crises and the determinants of various stages of Eastern European economic development. The lectures are completed with an in-depth country-level comparative analysis and case studies during the seminars.

1. Central Europe – Eastern Europe: Behind the terms and definitions, types of historical development. Eastern Europe as a region
2. The economies of Eastern Europe at the turn of the century. The economic performance of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy
3. The economic impact of World War I and the peace settlements. Territorial and population changes in Eastern Europe after the war. The successor states of the former Austria-Hungary
4. Inflation, reconstruction and stabilization after World War I. Indebtedness and instability in the later 1920s. Governmental policies and the role of the West-European countries in the economic recovery. The Great Depression
5. Options of economic policies in the 1930s. Foreign trade and German infiltration. The second World War and the emergence of new regimes. The economic consequences of the cold war
6. Reconstruction, alliance and a new start under sovietised circumstances in the 1950s and 1960s. Economic performance, level of consumption and living standards. Eastern Europe within the Soviet orbit. The COMECON era
7. Economic slowdown and reforms in Eastern Europe. Energy shocks in the 1970s and debt crisis in Eastern Europe. Economy and society in the 1980s. Midterm exam
