Course description: The aims of the course are to describe, examine and analyse the relation of Sustainability to social, environmental, ethical and business performance in the corporate sector.

The term ‘CSR’ is used to apply to a wide variety of company activities and is often thought to mainly refer to multinational enterprises that operate across varying sectors and/or geographical regions. Maximising the Triple Bottom Line has reportedly become a strategic objective of some businesses, and Fortune 500 companies compete to publish the best corporate social responsibility reports. Yet criticism of the impact of corporations and a loss of public trust in these increasingly powerful institutions is strongly in evidence and appears to be growing. Mounting evidence suggests that a prosperous and healthy future requires the establishment and operation of enterprises which conform more tightly to the principles of ‘Sustainability’ – meaning better coupling between the workings of industry and a broad spectrum of stakeholder interests – including full consideration for the state of the natural environment. Is CSR one way to operationalise these sustainability interests?

Assessment, grading: Final test, presentation, class activity
