Nobel Prize winners

  • Albert von Szent-Györgyi: discoverer of Vitamin C.
  • Imre Kertész: he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel Fateless in 2002, based on his experiences in the concentration camps of Buchenwald and Auschwitz.

Hungarian discoverers, inventors

  • Leó Szilárd: designer of the nuclear reactor. He built together with Enrico Fermi the first nuclear reactor in 1940, with the first chain-reaction taking place in it in 1942.
  • Ede Teller: creator of the hydrogen-bomb (and an opponent of weapons of mass destruction).
  • Ferenc Pavlics: builder of the moon-vehicle. The NASA moon-vehicle was developed in 1971 under his management.
  • Ernő Rubik: creator of the well-known Rubik's Cube.

Sports people

  • László Papp: boxer. He won the Olympic gold medal three times in a row for the first time in boxing history: London 1948, Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956.
  • Ferenc Puskás: probably the best known Hungarian. He was a member of the 'Golden Team', who beat the English squad 6-3 at their home in 1953, which had not happened before for almost a century.
  • Judit Polgár: the greatest woman chess player in the history of chess.
