Welcome to
the Financial Laboratory (FinLab)
homepage of the Corvinus University of Budapest

The Corvinus University of Budapest opened its financial laboratory on 21 November 2013. The laboratory hosts 12 Bloomberg terminals, a widely used professional trading and data resource in the finance industry. One goal was to establish a Trading Room, where in accordance with the international trends, the Corvinus University of Budapest will be able to support finance education and research methodologies, and by this, to enhance the attractiveness of the University’s offered programs.

The exclusive venue that hosts the Financial Laboratory is nestled in the state-of-the-art University Library. The trading room atmosphere is genuinely reflected by the monitor screens that broadcast world market graphs with 15 minute delay. All this is visible for the visitors through the glass wall of the FinLab. The Laboratory is unique throughout Central and Eastern Europe in terms of its capacity. We based our model of the FinLab on the examples of USA Universities of Richmond and Bentley.

Opening hours

During the study period, opening hours are aligned to the timetable of the room. The FinLab could be used on weekdays from 8 am to 9 pm.

To use the laboratory, booking via the Moodle system is required. After entering Moodle there is a small window on the left with a link “FinLab Foglalás/Reservation”. Click on this to reserve a “block” (on weekdays a single block is 45 minutes, on Saturdays it is 60 minutes long).

Terms of use are as follows:
1. Currently the laboratory can be used only by the students of Corvinus. We are working on developing products that we could offer for our alumni and others (e.g. students of other universities).
2. It is forbidden to enter the laboratory with coats, bring food and drinks. Mobile phones should be turned off.
3. Computers that are not reserved can be used without booking.
4. During classes the laboratory can only be used with the permission of the course instructor.

The laboratory is located within the Central Library of Corvinus on the first floor of building C. (Közraktár utca 4-6).

Budapest Stock Exchange Top List 2013

The Budapest Stock Exchange awarded the Exchange Top List awards based on the recommendation of a seven-member professional jury a total of nine awards. In the category of enhancing Hungarian Capital Markets, the Foundation of the Department of Finance, Corvinus University of Budapest, was awarded this prize for its FinLab project.

The Corvinus FinLab is a unique Financial Laboratory in Central Europe, that provides access to the world's largest stock exchanges trading data. The University’s Trading Room promotes financial education at the university and research methodology renewal, and thus further increase the attractiveness of academic programs and financial disciplines recognition. An important objective of the FinLab is to promote the long-term development of the quality of Hungarian economic and financial specialist training. The Finance Lab also develops the students' financial education, encouraging investor thinking, personal financial decisions and laying the foundations for entrepreneurial attitudes and brings the investment analysis and risk management to life.

Inspiration – Where the idea comes from

	University of Richmond - The Lessing Trading Floor
The Trading Floor in Richmond supports the so-called „Experimental Learning” program in which volunteer senior finance students completely mimic the internal processes of a mutual fund and manage a part of the university’s funds (they enter into contracts, compose the strategy of the mutual fund, hold „board meetings” to discuss the asset allocation strategy, mandate brokers for transactions, evaluate the fund’s performance, compile the bookkeeping and the entire administration). Since all decisions should be backed up by researches and analyses the students can put their theoretical knowledge into practice - “learning by doing”. The Trading Floor occupies a relatively large area at the university as altogether they put into operation 45(great hall) + 12 (small room) computer terminals. This greater capacity is required because here they have more classroom sessions and external trainings than in Richmond. In addition, there are more students potentially using the room. They hold the classes, trainings and company presentations in the great hall while in the small room students can study and research on their own. The Trading Room is entirely managed by Richard Gibble (Director of HCFS).
